Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite Minor Characters

Top 5 Wednesday is a Goodreads group hosted by Lainey from gingerreadslainey and Samantha from Thoughts on Tomes. You can find the Goodreads group here.

May 24th: Favorite Minor Characters

Minor characters are less than a sidekick or a side character (but not in our hearts!)

  • Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

SHOUTOUT TO A FELLOW RAVENCLAW! #RavenclawPride

Luna is an incredibly, fantastic character who I wish got more recognition in the series. Many love her for her quirky ways and the confidence she has in herself, but Luna is also quite humble and selfless. She has a kind heart and showed Dobby respect when he came to rescue Luna and others in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She was teased throughout her school years, but she never let that darken her spirits. Luna is such a bright soul. I love her character to pieces!

  • Asterin Blackbeak from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

Image result for asterin blackbeak  source

Asterin is an Ironteeth witch and Manon Blackbeak’s Second. She is beyond fierce, and her loyalty to Manon is overpowering. Asterin is a witch to be reckoned with. Her back story has some painful moments that have made Asterin the strong warrior she is now. She is always ready to stand by Manon’s side, no matter the repercussions.

  • Cam from the Witchlands series by Susan Dennard

Image result for cam windwitch

Cam is a trans boy with so much bravery and skill. Cam is by Merik’s side to aid in whatever troubles they’ve encountered next. His loyalty to Merik is admirable, and I love the witty remarks he makes. We find out that Cam was born a girl and is running from her family ties for reasons still unknown to us. However, Cam identifies and dresses as a boy. I am very excited to see if we get to find out more about Cam as the series continues, and I hope we get Cam’s POV in later books too!

  • Noah Czerny from the Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater

Noah Czerny by xla-hainex   source

Noah was a student  at Aglionby Academy whose naivety was his downfall. Still Noah’s character has such a presence. As soon as I met his character, I fell in love with him. Noah is quiet and timid, but he plays such a huge role in the story line. When his backstory is revealed, my heart broke in two. His introverted personality seems to balance out the other boys he becomes friends with. I just really enjoy Noah’s dynamic to the characters in the Raven Cycle series!

  • Mr. Lewis from The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Image result for the hate u give book

Mr. Lewis is an elder man who runs the barber shop in Garden Heights. He is comical at times when high teenagers come into his shop, and he made me giggle a lot. Mr. Lewis is close friends with Starr’s dad. The two have a running argument over over Dr. King vs Huey Newton. Making Garden Heights really come to life, Mr. Lewis adds a friendly and relatable feeling to the story. His generosity towards Starr’s family at the end of the book warmed my heart. Mr. Lewis is totally an underrated character, but he is amazing!

How to Make a Wish by Ashley Herring Blake BOOK REVIEW.

Book Review

How to Make a Wish by Ashley Herring Blake

Young adult, Contemporary, LGBTQIA+

“All seventeen year-old Grace Glasser wants is her own life. A normal life in which she sleeps in the same bed for longer than three months and doesn’t have to scrounge for spare change to make sure the electric bill is paid. Emotionally trapped by her unreliable mother, Maggie, and the tiny cape on which she lives, she focuses on her best friend, her upcoming audition for a top music school in New York, and surviving Maggie’s latest boyfriend—who happens to be Grace’s own ex-boyfriend’s father.

Her attempts to lay low until she graduates are disrupted when she meets Eva, a girl with her own share of ghosts she’s trying to outrun. Grief-stricken and lonely, Eva pulls Grace into midnight adventures and feelings Grace never planned on. When Eva tells Grace she likes girls, both of their worlds open up. But, united by loss, Eva also shares a connection with Maggie. As Grace’s mother spirals downward, both girls must figure out how to love and how to move on.”

This book was everything I needed it to be and more. It was impossible to put it down for even a moment! I related to this story on such a deep and personal level that this book will have a place forever in my heart. I already want to reread it, so I can tab and mark all of my favorite moments!

The characters in this story feel so believable. This novel contains bisexual and lesbian representation, as well as a POC character. The representation for both of the individuals in the story felt realistic. There was a normalcy to LGBTQIA+ characters in the story that I loved! Neither character was hiding who they were or ashamed of who they were for their sexual identity, so this story shows healthy ideals when it comes to sexual identity in teens. Also, the characters had depth and complexity. Not only the main character but every side character as well had growth throughout the story line.

The plot and its concept was what had me gripped the entire read. Ashley Herring Blake dives into the topic of alcoholism and how it can affect a family and a community. I truly appreciated the honest and real portrayal of alcoholism that Blake gave us. It is terribly sad and frustrating at times, but that’s the truth of alcoholism. Grace’s emotions were authentic, and I felt my heart breaking for her every downward spiral that her mother took. The plot wrapped up in such a beautiful way that it left me in tears. While the ending came to a definite closure, I was left wanting more from these characters that I latched onto. I didn’t want to leave them or this story.

Ashley Herring Blake executed the topic of alcoholism immaculately while giving bisexual and lesbian voices a positive portrayal in this heart-wrenching contemporary.  “How to Make a Wish is an emotionally charged portrait of a mother and daughter’s relationship and a heartfelt story about two girls who find each other at the exact right time.”

Harry Potter Moment of the Week.

This is a weekly Thursday feature hosted by Lunar Rainbows Reviews that any blogger can join! It focuses on Harry Potter fun and reminiscing in our favorite HP moments!

Here is the link to the Harry Potter Moment of the Week Topics.

Today’s topic: Favorite Dobby moment?

AHHHH! Dobby is one of my all time favorite HP characters! He is the first funko pop I bought too (hehe). Choosing my favorite Dobby moment is going to be hard!

When Dobby was freed and worked in the kitchens at Hogwarts, he was such an inspiration to the other elves there. Dobby was paid one Galleon a week, and got one day off each month. This showed other elves that they deserve freedom from their slavery too. Dobby’s character was underrated, but extremely important. He was the role model for the oppressed elves in the series, and I love him! He was so into Hermione’s S.P.E.W. (Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare) club that he would steal all the socks and scarves she’d make. I always found him hysterical for that!

Dobby was also courageous and fiercely loyal to those he loved. He proved his bravery and love to Harry and his friend when he saved them from the Malfoy’s Manor. Though he was fatally wounded, Dobby remained in the hearts of many.

Well.

That got sad quickly.

To brighten the mood again, here are some Dobby gifs/pictures!

1) Your top 3 favorite books

Image result for lady midnight cassandra clare  Image result for crooked kingdom leigh bardugo  Image result for a gathering of shadows ve schwab

  • Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Cassandra Clare has done it again with an absolutely incredible book. This series is going amazing places already. It may battle TMI for my favorite series from Cassie Clare. Lord of Shadows releases soon (May 23rd), and I cannot contain my excitement for it!

  • Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

Everything I wanted from this sequel. Best duology I have ever read! I wish it wasn’t over. I have fallen for every single one of these characters. They all seem so real. I adore this world. It’s dark and ruthless and such a great fantasy world. The politics are ridiculous in this book, Bardugo always had the reader guessing what was up Kaz Brekker’s sleeve next. This plot kept me on my toes the entire time, and it was such an incredible read! I can’t wait to see if Bardugo visits this world again with another series.
READ THIS DUOLOGY IF YOU HAVEN’T. >:)

  • A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

I am so happy to have gotten back into this world with the sequel and it did not disappoint! I loved the characters even more, and they were more developed and complex in this sequel. We got some new characters too who were just as incredible! I found the beginning slower and building up and up, but then BAM! The last third was so fast paced I didn’t ever want to put the book down! The plot was not predictable at all and had lots of greats twists and turns throughout to keep you gripped. I am such a fan of Schwab’s writing, but I have to say that she has out done herself in this book. Her writing was fantastic, and it’s great to have seen her grown as an author! I will continue to read every book she publishes. #SchwabIsQueen

2) Your top 3 least favorite books

Image result for paper towns john green   Image result for attachments rainbow rowell

  • Paper Towns by John Green

I expected more from this. It had a very dull plot and flat characters. I didn’t get any type of attachment for the story at all, and the ending was anticlimactic. Margot is a little brat too. Quentin was one dimensional as a character. I wasn’t a fan..

  • Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

I found Lincoln quite creepy. I didn’t think what he did should have ever been justified. Also, realistically, I think Beth would have had a different response to his actions in the actual world. I didn’t connect to the characters or the story at all. The only thing I liked about it was Jennifer, Beth’s friend. She was the only character who seemed real and believable. Everything else was strange to me, and Lincoln’s actions bordered stalker. I love Rainbow Rowell’s other books that I have read (Fangirl and Eleanor & Park). I would recommend skipping this book if you’re going to read any of her work.

3) A popular author you love

CASSIE CLARE!!! Related image

  • Cassandra Clare author of The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, and The Dark Artifices series

If it wasn’t for me finding this series three years ago, I would never have gotten back into reading. I also would never have found booktube or book blogs and never have known about book events. This series got me whole heartedly back into reading. At Bookcon 2016, I got to meet Cassandra Clare, and it is still my top highlight when it comes to author events. She was so friendly and down to earth. I am and forever will be Cassie Clare trash. ❤

4) A popular author you don’t love

John Green.. I find his stories and characters extremely bland and cliché.

5) An underrated book you think everyone should read

Image result for illusions of fate kiersten white

  • Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White

This book is amazingly adorably with the two main characters Finn and Jessa! I loved the way the plot played out, and it was not what I was expecting! And the romance was perfect in this; it wasn’t too overbearing but still had moments that made your heart skip a beat. The ending was just beautiful. For such a small book, there was a lot of substance to this story. I love this book, and I wish it wasn’t a stand alone! More people definitely need to pick this up.

p.s. It totally gives you Howl’s Moving Castle vibes!!

p.p.s. It has a POC main character too, and she is FANTASTIC! Yay for diversity!

6) A series you won’t finish

Image result for vampire academy books

  • The Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead

I cannot seem to get into this series. I have read up to book four, and it still hasn’t grabbed my attention. The plot is predictable, and I really dislike the main character, Rose. I don’t see myself ever coming back to this series to finish it.

7) Earliest bookish memory

hungrycaterpillarf.jpg

For my preschool graduation, we performed The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I remember having a blast stuffing plastic play food into my green pouch. Later, we ran around as new butterflies to symbolize our growth into our next step to kindergarten.

8) Favorite bookish memory

ALL OF THE FRIENDS I HAVE MADE THROUGH BOOKS! I never thought I would meet as many people as I have through talking about books on different platforms. I have made friends that I will continue to talk to for the rest of my life.

9) Your favorite genre to read

FANTASY. FANTASY. FANTASY. ALL THE FANTASY!

10) Your least favorite genre to read

Horror? Mostly because I haven’t read any and don’t seem to have a want to.

11) One difficult or important book you’re proud to have read

Image result for in order to live yeonmi park

  • In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park

This story was difficult to read for what Yeonmi went through. It was important to read for its enlightenment of this part of our world. It held the raw truth and journey of a young North Korean girl escaping starvation, human trafficking, and many other hardships. She never lost her drive to want her freedom. Her hope in the world still having a lot of good brought tears to my eyes. The things she had to go through as a 13 year old are unimaginable to me. I cannot help but deeply appreciate Yeonmi Park for her human rights activist work and for being a voice of the many North Koreans still suffering. This book taught me many things. Learning about North Korea, China, and South Korea through the eyes of a refugee girl was moving. It was such an passionate story, and I feel that it’s important for everyone to read or at the least watch Yeonmi Park’s One Young World Speech to hear and share her story.

12) Your favorite childhood book

Image result for the tale of despereaux

  • The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

This is such a cute and entertaining read. It is the story of a little brave mouse, a lost rat, a wishful slave girl, and a sweet princess. Their lives all become intertwined. I really liked how the author addressed the reader and relaid good ethics through the story. When a young reader reads this story, they are getting a good message to always be yourself and be brave told to them along with this adventurous tale.

13) Your favorite book cover

Image result for nevernight jay kristoff uk

  • Nevernight by Jay Kristoff UK Edition

It’s just gorgeous! The inside maps are stunning as well!

14) An ugly book cover

Image result for easy tammara webber  *cringe*

  • Easy by Tammara Webber

It makes me so sad that this cover is so terrible, because this book is fantastic. It covers the topic of rape and rape culture, and it is a beautifully important story. It desperately needs a cover change though!

15) A Diverse book recommendation

Image result for that thing we call a heart by sheba karim

-Muslim American characters

-Muslim culture references (Urdu poetry, hijabs)

“Featuring complex, Muslim-American characters who defy conventional stereotypes and set against a backdrop of Radiohead’s music and the evocative metaphors of Urdu poetry, THAT THING WE CALL A HEART is a honest, moving story of a young woman’s explorations of first love, sexuality, desire, self-worth, her relationship with her parents, the value of friendship, and what it means to be true.”

16) Why do you love to read

To escape the real world for stolen moments within a story that take you to another place entirely.

2017 Reading Goals.

This year I have set out to read 55 books throughout the year. This goal seems so small compared to reading over a 100 books last year, but this year is busy! I graduated nursing school, which was an extreme feat in itself. I have started a new job in the medical field. Basically I am transitioning into adult life, and it is HARD. With school behind me, I am hoping I will catch up on this reading goal and complete it by the end of the year!

What are your reading goals? This can be a certain number of books you’re trying to complete, or it can be specific. (i.e. goal to read more own voices or to read more diversely). Comment below!
